Create segments based on attributes

Updated over a week ago

Segments are groups of users who are connected through shared responses with attributes mapped. Creating segments allows you to sort your customer base into useful cohorts so you can prove or disprove hypotheses about specific customer groups and gather insights on trends associated with that group.

Before you begin

  • Attributes must have been mapped and collected data before you can pull them into a segment

Adding segments

Follow these steps to add a segment:

  1. Go to Attributes in the main navigation bar.

  2. Click the Segments tab.

  3. Click the Add Segment box.

  4. Name your segment and choose a color. You can edit the name and color later by clicking the edit icon next to the segment name. Choose a name that describes the people in the segment, such as “Exercise Lovers” or “Fashionistas”.

  5. Click the checkbox.

  6. Drag the attribute values that define the segment into the segment box. You can drag one value, multiple values, or the entire attribute. For instance, a segment named “Fashionistas” might include people who shop more than once a week, identify as stylish, and get fashion advice from magazines.

Managing Segment Logic

When you add attributes and attribute values to a segment, the platform applies specific logic:

  • Within a single attribute, adding multiple attribute values uses OR logic. For example, if you add both Camping or B&B values from the Accommodation Preference attribute to a segment, it includes users who match either Camping or B&B.

  • Between different attributes, the values you add use AND logic. For instance, if you define a segment with Accommodation Preference: Camping and Favorite Activity: Hiking, experiences only include users who have both of those attribute value pairs.

Using Form Field Attributes in Segments

You can pull Form Field Attributes into a segment, but the logic differs because these attributes, like Name or Email, do not collect a defined set of values. Instead, experiences uses Known, Unknown, or Contains to categorize users for these segments.

  • Known: This option limits the segment to users for whom a value has been collected for the given attribute. For example, "Vehicle Model: Known" restricts the segment to users with a collected value for the Vehicle Model attribute.

  • Unknown: This option limits the segment to users for whom a value has not yet been collected for a given attribute. For instance, "Zip code: Unknown" limits the segment to users with no attribute value for Zip code.

  • Contains: This option allows you to add free text. The segment then limits to users whose collected attribute value contains the value(s) you typed in. You can use multiple values by separating them with a comma; for example, "Email contains: yahoo, gmail" limits the segment to users whose email addresses contain either "yahoo" or "gmail" within the collected attribute value.

Deleting Segments

You can delete a Segment by clicking on the trash bin icon on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What will happen if I add more than one Attribute Value from the same Attribute into a Segment?

Within a single Attribute, the Attribute Values that you add use “OR” logic. For example, if you pull the Attribute “Accommodation Preference" into a Segment with both Attribute Values "Camping and B&B” the Segment would include users that match either "Camping" or "B&B."

  • What will happen if I add more than one Attribute into a Segment?

Between Attributes, the values that you add use “AND” logic. For example, if you have a Segment defined as “Accommodation Preference: Camping” and “Favorite Activity: Hiking” then Jebbit will only pull users who collect both Attribute Value pairs into the Segment.

  • Why can't I pull a new Attribute that I've created into a Segment yet?

You will not be able to create Segments until the Attributes you have mapped have collected data.

  • Is there a limit to the amount of Attributes that I can pull into a Segment?

There is no limit on the amount of Attributes you can add to a segment, however, the more you add, the fewer matching profiles you are likely to see.
